Malta is a small island nation located in the Mediterranean Sea, known for its beautiful beaches, historic sites, and clear blue waters. But what many people don't know is that Malta is also home to a diverse array of marine life and ecosystems.
One of the best places to see this marine life is in the Cirkewwa Marine Park, a protected area located in the northwest of Malta. The marine park is home to a variety of species, including seagrass beds, rocky reefs, and a wide range of fish and invertebrates. Some of the most common species found in the marine park include octopus, seahorses, cuttlefish, and a variety of species of wrasse and bream. In addition to these, divers can also explore the benthic life such as gorgonians, starfish, crustaceans (such as lobsters and magnosa).
In addition to the marine park, Malta's waters are also home to a variety of other unique marine ecosystems, such as deep sea caves, shipwrecks, and submarine canyons. These habitats provide homes for a wide range of species, including rays, eels, and a variety of species of sharks. Furthermore, there is also a possibility of spotting various species of cetaceans, including species typical of the continental shelf (such as bottlenose dolphins) and others more easily found outside of the platform, such as common dolphins, striped dolphins and spinner dolphins. Cetaceans and Mako sharks are easier to be spotted from boats, and Malta offers a huge variety of boat excursions, complete with snacks and drinks during the trip.
In the right season, some of the less popular sandy beaches of Malta host sea turtles nests; group of volunteers guards the nests till the eggs hatch and with a bit of luck it's possible to assist to the little turtle's first "run" to the sea.
Even if not common, it is also possible to spot sea turtles during diving and or snorkeling tours in areas not busy with a lot of tourists.
While scuba diving in Malta's waters can provide an opportunity to see some of these unique marine species and ecosystems, it's important to remember that seeing all of them is not guaranteed. Marine life and conditions can vary depending on the time of year, weather conditions, and other factors. However, with proper dive planning and a willingness to explore, divers can have an enjoyable and memorable experience discovering the unique marine life and ecosystems of Malta.
